Your Privacy Rights: Understanding FERPA 

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of your college records. It gives you control over who can see your academic information—and how it’s shared.

FERPA applies to all students at Butler County Community College (BC3), regardless of age, once they’ve enrolled in classes.

Your Rights Under FERPA

As a BC3 student, FERPA gives you the right to:

• View your education records. You can inspect your academic files and transcripts.
• Request corrections. If you believe something’s wrong in your record, you can ask for a change.
• Control who sees your info. You decide if your information—like grades or enrollment—can be shared with others.
• File a complaint. If you think your rights have been violated, you can contact the U.S. Department of Education.

Need to Share Your Records?

If you’d like BC3 to talk to a parent, guardian, or someone else about your academic info, you’ll need to fill out a FERPA Release Authorization form.
